Will McConnell named CEO

March 17, 2017

Mercy Regional Medical Center’s Board of Directors has named Will McConnell, MBA, Ph.D., as the new president and chief executive officer of the hospital.

McConnell replaces outgoing CEO Tom Gessel, who led the hospital since September of 2012 and was promoted last January to become the senior vice president of operations and network development at Centura Health, Mercy’s parent organization.

McConnell most recently served as Mercy’s vice president of operations and outreach strategy. In that role, he was responsible for overseeing operations and growth of Mercy’s 16 primary care and specialty clinics.

McConnell joined Mercy’s Senior Leadership team in 2010. Prior to that, he worked for Carilion Clinic, a six-hospital, not-for-profit health care organization in Roanoke, Virginia.

McConnell earned his Ph.D. and a master’s degree at Colorado State University and a Master of Business Administration degree from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the Medical Group Management Association. He is certified as a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt.
