Students get tough on Self Defense

Female Vista Nueva students get hands on self defense class

Participant learns how to counter a hair pulling attack with the help of instructor Travis Gillentine

On Monday 1/23, students of Aztec's Vista Nueva High School were treated to live demonstration and exercises in the fine art of personal self defense from SJC Sheriffs; The National Self Defense Institute; and Aztec Karate Academy. Ahna Clark and her husband Jon started the institute to help young women entering college be better prepared during this transition period between high school and college. According to Jon, the Clark's hope to expand the offering to other area schools. Approximately 22 female Vista Nueva students attended the 3 hour free class hosted at the Aztec Boys and Girls Club on Monday. Class costs were funded by donations and public classes offered through exercise facilities. All classes are offered from the defenders perspective and are focused on rape prevention and awareness. Class instructors included the Gillentines of Aztec Karate, Jon and Ahna Clark of National Self Defense Institute, Sergeant Candice, and Jayme Harcrow of SJC Sheriffs Dept.
