Sean and Mike Paschall began brewing their own beer out of love for the craft and the pure enjoyment of consumption. Having the chance to put their own spin on the blossoming craft beer "fad" was purely a personal goal. They had the ability to let friends, family and patrons at the Hiway Grill sample the wide selection of flavors and styles of craft beer. Soon they had narrowed their selections down to the most popular choices, then three years ago the two began to sell their wares at the local speedway during racing season. Through word of mouth and continuing honing of brewing knowledge, the beer began to become more popular, until they were found at local music festivals and city community activities. Fast forward to 2016. After working with the city commission and their concept of an incubator for small businesses called the HUB, at 119 E. Chuska St, they began to shape a space for the new brewery in the form of a taproom.

The taproom for 550 Brewing was a labor of love for Sean and his father Mike, wanting to have a place for anyone local or even travelers from far and wide to enjoy high quality local craft beer in a relaxed environment that is family friendly. The taproom is filled with various games, from foosball to card games and has cozy seating areas for family and friends to gather for conversation and making memories. The summer of 2016 saw trial openings with gatherings on the sizable patio, featuring food trucks, and local musicians for entertainment.

The beginning of this year they opened their doors, and have been pleasantly received by the locals. The Paschall family has a history of opening quality establishments in Aztec over the past years and 550 Brewing is another solid idea being brought to life. 550 is offering six styles including IPA, Blonde, Irish Red, Stout and a Brown ale, each with its own unique qualities, and satisfying in its own respect.

In a low tech twist on social media, 550 has a "buy your buddy a beer" board. The board allows you to buy your buddy a beer (in advance) and put their name on the board, so the next time your buddy comes in he (or she) can enjoy your generosity. In the spring, 550 will be doing a lot more live music and food on the patio, opening it up for outdoor games, fun for young and old. In May of this year, we will see the Aztec Boys and Girls Club's Harley Raffle being held on the patio as well. For the time being only popcorn is available to snack on, but Rubia's will deliver and there are several other eateries downtown that you can grab food to go and eat at the taproom. "One day soon we hope to have food available here as well," said Sean. The goal is to bring more commerce to historical downtown Aztec, where it is beginning to see a resurgence in foot traffic.

For now the hours of business are Monday thru Saturday 3pm to 9pm, Friday noon to 11pm, and Saturday, 11am to 11pm. Be sure and give the 550 Brewing Facebook page a look and a like. Support local Aztec businesses by bringing in your receipt of purchases made at a local business on Mondays for a discount on your beer. They also have tea, coffee, water, and colas to purchase. The future is looking bright for Sean Paschall. Be sure and look for 550 at the Aztec Speedway this coming season, the annual Blues Festival, and the Riverfest.
