Aztec School Board

January meeting

January 20, 2017

The Aztec School Board voted to renew Mr. Kirk Carpenter's contract as Superintendent for three more years. This decision came at the end of their special meeting, which ws held prior to the regular board meeting. Each of the current board members praised Mr. Carpenter after their vote. Roger Collins called Carpenter "an outstanding superintendent," and Board President Wayne Ritter followed with "We are blessed to have Mr. Carpenter, he's very respected all over the state."

The regular meeting found the board listening to a presentation by the administrators at McCoy School. Principal Dr. Troy Webb introduced two of his teachers and his vice principal. They all talked about their school: the culture, professional developent and fun.

Dr. Webb also requested student travel to be able to take a small group of children to the Isotopes game in Albuquerque on May. He said the trip would be offered to students who have perfect attendance this year, have a 3 (out of possible 4) or better grade point, and have had no discipline or write-ups during the year. There are currently only 8 students who would qualify to go on the trip. The board voted to approve the travel.

The other travel request came from AHS JROTC, who would be traveling to Durango Mountain Resort (Purgatory) for winter survival training, first aid training, and half day of skiing or snowboarding. This travel was also approved by the board.

Mr. John Laws, director of transportation, told board members that the City sewer project is going to begin on Jan. 17, and buses will be unable to enter and exit the bus yard from Lightplant Road. He said half of the buses will be staged at two different location, and half will be exiting from the administrative offices onto Aztec Blvd. He said they had made test runs and everything seemed to go smooth. The construction is scheduled to be finished by Feb. 20.

The next regular School Board meeting is scheduled for Feb. 9, beginning at 6:30 pm.
