Playmakers Travel to Santa Fe

Attend Thespian Festival

January 20, 2017

Playmakers Jojo Reiff, Janae Lillywhite, Riley Merritt, Abigail Hawkins, Jazmin Lewis, Megan Erlandson and Skylar Israel enjoyed taking time out of their busy day for dinner in Santa Fe

On Jan. 12, nine members of AHS's Playmakers group left Aztec for a 3 day Thespian Festival. The festival was held at the Santa Fe University of Art and Design. The students were kept busy with performances and workshops.

When not performing their individual events, they attended workshops to help them with performances, set design, sound, lighting, directing, and many other aspects of producing a successful show.

Each student's performance was judged and critiqued by three judges. In order to qualify for the International Thespian Festival held in June of each year in Lincoln, Nebraska, a student had to receive at least two "excellent" ratings from the judges. Two of Aztec's Playmakers came home with the ratings they needed to qualify.

Isaac Stembridge qualified in his field of stage management for the Playmakers production of the Snow Queen, and Jojo Reiff qualified with her sound design in "The Other Room." Reiff "showcased," meaning that she got three superior ratings, the best possible scores.

Reiff said, "I was pretty proud, it was the second year in a row that I showcased." About the festival, she added, "The workshops are taught by professionals in their areas and you can learn a lot from them."

Stembridge explained the job of the stage manager, which is to make sure everything runs smoothly. He said he scored two superiors and one excellent. "And I got to learn a lot about stage combat," he added.

The Playmakers hope to make the trip to the international festival, but need to raise funds to help pay for their trip.
