Work for Yourself @ 50+

San Juan College Enterprise Center

January 13, 2017

San Juan College Enterprise Center was recently awarded a $16,372 Work for [email protected]+℠ grant from the AARP Foundation, with support from The Hartford.

AARP Foundation’s Work for [email protected]+ will help low- and moderate-income adults age 50+ gain the knowledge, support, and resources they need to make informed decisions and take the first steps toward successful self-employment.

The Enterprise Center and resource partners will conduct a series of workshops in the community using materials developed by the AARP Foundation for Work for [email protected]+. The workshops will include opportunities for individuals to assess their strengths and abilities in the context of self-employment and learn about ways to move ideas forward for new business ventures.

People attending the workshops will be given a pathway to building skills through education and community business development resources. Participants who decide that they would like to pursue self-employment, may receive skills training through the Center for Workforce Development. Other resource partners also will be utilized to ensure that the participants build the network of business assistance they need.

Work for [email protected]+ looks at self-employment paths in contracting, freelancing, microbusiness and social enterprise, and helps people identify their own marketable traits, talents and skills. It also offers useful financial advice — regardless of participants’ specific financial situation.

The Enterprise Center sees this program as a meaningful way to assist both older workers affected by the recent layoffs in our community and individuals who would like to increase personal income by pursuing self-employment. Using the many resources already available through partnerships within San Juan College and the community will help these individuals create a new source of income for themselves and their families.

Workshops will be held December 1 at 9:00 at the Farmington Museum, 3041 E. Main; January 18, 2017 at 2 at San Juan College West 69 CR 6500 Kirtland; February 15, 2017 at 2:00 at the Aztec HUB, 119 E. Chuska; and March 16, 2017 at 2:00 at the Bloomfield Multicultural Center 333 S. 1st, Bloomfield.
