Black Watch Wrestling Tournament

Aztec Wrestles

January 6, 2017

The Christmas trip to California was extremely beneficial toward our march to the State Tournament. The even younger Tigers (due to 3 normal starters not being able to travel over the holidays), held up against 66 other teams at the always tough 47th annual Black Watch Invitational held in Upland, California. The Tigers departed on Monday, Dec. 26 to Gallup to catch the train at 7:00 pm, arriving in San Bernardino the next morning at 6:30. They then drove 45 miles to Upland High School, weigh-ins and wrestled until 8:30. That night, they drove 30 miles to the motel. We were up and down the road.

At 7:15 the next morning, we were at weigh-ins and wrestled until it was over that night at 8:00 pm. After all the dust had settled, 11 of the 13 wrestlers had scored and 5 placed, giving us a 5th place team finish.

With the strength of three in the finals, one in the consolation finals, and one in for 7th place, the team earned 160 points for the two days of work. Austin Littlefield our lone Champion, was awarded Outstanding Upper Weight Wrestler with 4 falls and 1 tech fall going 5-0. In the finals, he pinned Tanner Griffin of Chino High school in 1:06 of the first period. The Boys had an opportunity to pay homage at the USS Iowa. They learned what had gone on during the 65 years it was on duty. Nicknamed the Battleship of the Presidents and the Big Stick, it served through World War II, Korean War and during the Cold War earning 11 Battle Stars.

Bella Wells was our lone girl representative at the 2nd annual Black Watch Girls Invitational. Bella was the talk of the tournament as she wrestled her way to the championship. Sixty girl teams were represented from all over California. Bella showed just how tough and skilled an Aztec wrestler can be. She beat a senior, defending tournament Champion and CIF Champion Monica Kezis from Rancho Mirage 10-7 in a very solid match. Alone, Bella of Team Aztec, placed 27th out of 60 teams.
