About Talon News
TALON, or “The Aztec Local News”, was established in 1993 by Candy Frizzell, who saw a need in our community for a local paper. The first TALON issue was published in October of that year, and had a lot of white space. In the beginning, our “office” was an oversized closet, located in Candy’s home. In 2014 Candy decided it was time to retire and J.R. Sykes of TALON Publishing stepped up and purchased the paper.
Listening to the community, TALON has incorporated more local news, expanded advertising, design, and sales staff and today TALON is published weekly on Friday. Since 2014, we have seen circulation numbers grow until today TALON publishes 15,000 copies to over 50,000 readers across San Juan County. All that growth required a new office at 408 S. Park Avenue in Aztec which we took on in 2015.
Through the growth and change we have adhered to our first mission: To publish a distinct flavor of hyper local sports, business, health, poems, jokes, comics, and news items supporting our community. Using our expanded group of local writers, we cover local events and happenings, while maintaining regular space for community input articles and Dear TALON letters.
We welcome visitors and hope you can find the time to stop by, share a cup, and a story. Thank you for 25 years of community journalism.
